As we head towards the long weekend, my mind starts to drift towards the idea of the 'fair'. Growing up in Glasgow, I always associated the fair with mid-July. However, after many years of working in Renfrewshire, my perception of the fair has shifted to the first weekend in August.

This change in timing underscores how local traditions and experiences shape our understanding of cultural events, but I’m sure in both places the ‘fair’ was always considered a much-anticipated break, a time for families and communities to come together, enjoy the festivities, and create lasting memories. It was a highlight of the summer, filled with the excitement of rides, games, and the simple joy of shared experiences.

The idea of a local ‘fair’ of course stretches back into the past… In Scotland the Beltane Fair, deeply rooted in ancient Celtic traditions, marked the beginning of summer. This vibrant celebration was a time of joyous festivities and bustling trade, where communities gathered to welcome the new season with music, dancing, and the exchange of goods. The fair played a crucial role in the agricultural calendar, symbolising renewal and the promise of a fruitful harvest ahead.

In Renfrewshire, the first weekend of August for me should always mark a period of celebration and community spirit, reflecting the rich heritage of the area. Both Glasgow and Renfrewshire fairs, despite their differences in timing, represent more than just a few days of fun. They are a testament to the enduring importance of community gatherings and the celebration of local culture. These fairs create a sense of continuity, connecting past and present.

So, with the sun or not, I hope you have a great weekend and have all the fun of the fair.

All the best.

Alan
