Digital Wellbeing Conversation Starters Toolkit
Talking to children and young people about their online lives can feel hard. But we know it’s something that cannot be avoided if we’re going to support their mental health and wellbeing.
That’s why we have worked to create a Digital Wellbeing Conversation Starters Toolkit to help anyone who works with/supports a child or young person to start these conversations.
What is the toolkit?
The toolkit covers key areas of a child or young person’s digital wellbeing that you might want to check in with them about, mapped against the eight SHANARRI wellbeing indicators.
Before we launch the toolkit, we are offering the chance for people to be involved in testing it out via a pilot. This is so that it can be improved where needed to ensure it’s as helpful as possible to anyone who supports a child or young person.
How to get involved in the pilot?
Information about the pilot and what it involves has been detailed in the attached information sheet. Those who are interested in participating will need to:
- Complete a short pre-toolkit evaluation survey (5 questions)
- Attend a 1-hour briefing session on the toolkit
- Try using the toolkit to start a conversation with a child or young person (aged 10-26)
- Complete a short post-toolkit evaluation survey (5 questions)
There will also be an optional debriefing session that people can attend to discuss with their peers how it felt using the toolkit/having these conversations.
If you are interested in taking part in the pilot of this resource or have any questions, please do get in touch with us at ggc.mhead@nhs.scot.
Every Kid Shall Rock is an exciting new project by Loud n Proud and it's starting next week. All the young people need to do is turn up and we will help them get a start in music or if they can already play we can help them improve their skills.
Loud n Proud are pleased to announce the start of their new introductory music sessions for young people. It is called EVERY KID SHALL ROCK and starts on Friday 08 November. The free come and try style classes are for young people in Paisley and the wider area of Renfrewshire. The sessions will take the form of come and try workshops and early music group sessions. The target group are first timers or beginners and for those who can play an instrument already but would like to improve or try something different.
By providing free opportunities for young people to explore different musical instruments and get access to recording equipment we remove that barrier. Building on a similar grassroots project we delivered pre-pandemic we know there is a demand. 65% of participants never had lessons before. 80% said that cost was a barrier to playing music and 90% said that being free made it possible for them to take part.
As well as simply being a fun activity, music provides a wealth of benefits to the young people we work with. Transferable skills are developed such as resilience, patience, and perseverance, creativity and memory capacity are increased, confidence is developed, stress is reduced, and lifelong friendships are formed.
