Employment scams are rising sharply—up 237%—with jobseekers losing an average of £1,420. Because most jobs are now found online, scammers are increasingly using convincing tactics, including AI, to trick people. Falling for these scams can lead to identity or financial fraud, or even unknowingly taking part in criminal activity.

Below are some tips to make sure none of these things happen to you:

1. Check Employer Legitimacy
Research job sites, agencies, and employers to ensure they have a real physical address and landline number.

2. Control Your Profile Visibility
Set your online CV or profile to public, confidential, or private depending on what you’re comfortable with.

3. Verify “We Saw Your CV” Messages
If someone claims they found your CV online, confirm you actually enabled that option on the job site.

4. Treat Unsolicited Messages With Caution
Unexpected job texts or WhatsApp messages are common scam tactics — be sceptical.

5. Be Wary of Social Media Job Ads
Many fraudulent job ads circulate on social platforms — verify before engaging.

6. Never Pay Upfront
Genuine employers won’t ask for payment for CV services, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, or admin costs.

7. Protect Your Personal Information
Don’t give out National Insurance numbers, licence details, or bank information until you’re officially hired and the employer is verified.

8. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Secure your accounts with strong passwords that aren’t used elsewhere.

9. Avoid Suspicious Calls & Apps
Don’t call premium-rate or masked numbers, and be cautious with remote interviews on apps like Telegram or Signal.

10. Meet the Employer in Person
Even if the process is mostly online, a legitimate employer will want at least one face‑to‑face meeting.

If you are uncertain about a job advert or offer, or have encountered issues during your job, you can report it to JobsAware at www.jobsaware.co.uk. You can get direct help from a JobsAware advisor about whether a job or recruitment ad is likely to be genuine or not.

If you believe you have been the victim of an online scam, report it on the Action Fraud Website or by calling 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, call 101.
