Cold Calls
Brits Urged to Be Less Polite to Scammers
As online financial crime continues to rise, new data from Get Safe Online reveals that Brits are often too polite to scammers, making them more vulnerable. To tackle this issue, Get Safe Online has launched a campaign encouraging people to be more assertive with unexpected callers.er text.
Key Findings from the YouGov Omnibus Survey:
Common Experience: Over 93% of Brits have received calls from unknown numbers, yet many continue conversations out of politeness.
Politeness Equals Risk: Nearly 10% of people wait for a pause to end unwanted calls, while 4.7% chat with the caller as if it were a normal conversation.
Why We Stay Polite: 22% believe it’s simply the polite thing to do, while others don’t want to interrupt the caller.
Call to Action: Toughen Up Against Scammers
Get Safe Online urges the public to rethink their approach to unsolicited calls. It's time to stop being overly polite and prioritize personal safety. If you receive a call from an unknown number or one you weren't expecting, remember these simple steps:
- Be Direct: Politely but firmly say, "I'm not interested, thank you."
- Hang Up Immediately: Do not wait for a pause or continue the conversation.
- Stay Alert: Always be cautious with calls from unknown numbers and avoid sharing personal information.
DPA Tech4Families Research Launch at The Gailes Hotel, Irvine
Invitation: DPA Tech4Families Research Launch, hosted by Lord (Des) Browne of Ladyton
When: 14.00 for 14.30 – 16.30, Monday 19 August 2024
Where: The Gailes Hotel, Marine Drive, Irvine, Ayrshire, KA11 5AE
On the 19 August, the DPA and our partner, Currys plc, are delighted to invite you to the launch of the publication of our research, which has been looking at the impact of our Tech4Families programme. Since it began in May 2022, our Tech4Families project has supported 1,744 families – and works across seven key areas in Scotland (including Ayrshire), Northern Ireland, England and Wales. The programme supports families in need with laptops to keep for life, and connectivity support and resources. The research focused on the impact of the provision of laptops to children, their education, and their wider households.
You will hear from researchers from the University of Sussex about the impact of this interventional project, from our founding partner, Currys, about how they help us raise the funding for these devices through microdonations in stores across the UK, and from Lord (Des) Browne, former MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun and government minister, about the benefits of educational interventions of this nature and how research can help shape policy at the local and national level, as well as myself.
Please RSVP to Tia Green on tia@digitalpovertyalliance.org by 14 August.
Impact Arts is running a 12-week creative arts youth employability programme for young people aged 16-24 year.
Starting 11th September 2024. This is a Stage 1/2 course on the employability pipeline.
Renfrewshire based young people who are not in work, education or training can attend this programme which runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10am-3pm, to build confidence, make new friends, get support towards next steps and participate in lots of creative arts activities.
Participants can receive £35 per week training allowance for attending the programme and travel costs will also be reimbursed. In addition, there will be food and drinks available during the workshops. The programme will run at PACE’s venue on the top floor of the Paisley Shopping Centre, Causeyside Street, Paisley. This venue is a welcoming, safe and creative space. It’s also really easy to get to; located a short walk from Paisley Gilmour Street Station.
Impact Arts’ friendly, supportive delivery staff will work with participants during the programme to ensure everyone reaches their potential and has a great experience. Our Youth Worker will offer tailored support to help participants towards education, further training, an apprenticeship or employment. Our Creative Lead tutor will introduce participants to new artistic techniques and will guide them in producing artworks using various artforms.
At the end of the programme, there will be a celebratory showcase of work. This will be planned and hosted by the participants. Friends and family members will be invited to help the young people celebrate their achievements.
If you are a young person or a referrer, and you’re interested in joining the Express Yourself programme, please complete our REFERRAL FORM. A member of staff from Impact Arts will then be in touch.
We are grateful to our funders who have helped to make this programme a reality - the Renfrewshire Employability Grants programme and the Multiply fund.
If you’d like more information about the programme, you can visit our website: IMPACT ARTS WEBSITE or you can contact Programme Coordinator Andrea Gavin on andrea.gavin@impactarts.co.uk. I’ve attached a Participant Guide PDF booklet which should answer any questions.
Please share this opportunity to colleagues and other agencies you are in touch with.
Adults with Incapacity Amendment Act
This consultation seeks views on proposed changes to the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000. The changes put the adult front and centre of the legislation, reflecting UNCRPD, deprivation of liberty case law and the recommendations of the Scottish Mental Health Law Review.
This consultation is asking for your thoughts on proposals for reform to the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 (the AWI Act).
When the AWI Act was enacted in 2000, it was regarded as ground-breaking legislation. For the first time, Scotland had a comprehensive regime to protect the welfare and financial rights of persons lacking in capacity.
But international human rights law in this field has developed further since then and we need to ensure that Scotland's law remains fully fit for purpose.
