I hope you are all as delighted as me to see a bit of blue sky this week. The team here are more than ready to embrace spring, sunnier days and lighter nights. 

This week's funding newsletter has an exciting mix of funders looking to support work that creates positive social change, combats violations of human rights, and works to give underrepresented groups a voice – see Human Rights and Social Justice.

Carers and Care Experienced

Funding to Provide Short Breaks for Carers & the People they Care For
Third sector organisations across Scotland are invited to apply for a share of £1.1 million in funding to deliver short breaks projects and services that support the health and wellbeing of both carers and the people they care for. The Creative Breaks programme, administered by Shared Care Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government, will award 12-month grants to fund activities that enable carers and the people they care for to take a break from the daily caring routine. Activities could include overnight stays, residential breaks, days out, and regular activities. No funding amount is given, however the average grant awarded in previous years has been around £13,000. The deadline for applications is 5pm on the 23 May 2024. Find out more

 

 

Conservation

People's Trust for Endangered Species - Conservation Insight Grants
Scientific researchers and conservationists in the UK and around the world are invited to apply for funding for work that is aimed at the preservation of endangered species. Grants of up to £10,000 per annum for up to two years will be awarded to projects seeking to find the critical scientific evidence that will facilitate the conservation of one or more species or their habitat, or provide the answer to a key conservation question that will enable conservationists to undertake critical conservation action. The funding is made available by the Peoples Trust for Endangered Species through their Conservation Insight Grants programme which closes to applications at 11:59pm on the 25 August 2024. Human Rights and Social Justice

Funding for Projects that Tackle the Root Causes of Social Inequity
Not for profit organisations working towards a just and democratic society and to redress political and social injustices can apply for grants of between £1,000 and £5,000. The funding is available to causes outside the mainstream that are unlikely to receive funding from other sources. Examples of projects funded in the past include the Boaz Trust a Christian organisation serving destitute asylum seekers in Greater Manchester which received a grant of £2,000; and the Grandparents Association in Leeds which received a grant of £4,800. The funding is made through the Scurrah Wainright Charity and the next closing date for applications is the 14 May 2024.  Find out more

 

Funding for Projects that Combat Abuse and Violation of Human Rights  
UK-registered charities that work towards combating abuse and violations of human rights can apply for grants of usually between £10,000 and £30,000 through the A B Charitable Trust. The A B Charitable Trust (ABCT) was set up in 1990 and supports unpopular causes that champion human dignity and focus on small and medium-sized charities working close to the ground. Applications are particularly welcomed from charities working to support:  • migrants and refugees • criminal justice and penal reform • human rights, particularly access to justice. The next closing date for applications is the 26 April 2024Find out more

 

Grants for Cultural Organisations Working to Create Social Justice 
Grants ranging from £90,000 to £300,000 are available to build the capacity of cultural organisations that use art to create positive social change, particularly amongst historically underfunded communities across the UK. The Paul Hamlyn Foundation - Arts Fund provides core funding to arts organisations over three years, to increase their sustainability and to deepen the impact of their work. The Foundation will fund up to 50% of an organisation’s annual turnover. Priority will be given to applications which are anti-racist and intersectional in their approach. The Triangle Trust 1949 Fund Announces New Grants Strategy 
The Triangle Trust 1949 Fund has announced its new grants strategy for 2024. This year, the Trust is looking for projects focusing on vulnerable young women and girls across the UK who have been in the criminal justice system or who are at a high risk of entering it. The aim of the funding will be to either reduce the number of young women or girls who reoffend, or reduce the number of those who receive a first conviction. This funding opportunity will open on the 18 April 2024 with a view to awarding grants in the autumn. Registered charities will have until the 23 May 2024 to submit their applications. Funding to Support the Human Rights Sector
The Corra Foundation has announced that it will be launching a new fund to support the human rights sector in Scotland. The Independent Human Rights Fund for Scotland will help realise and defend rights, and tackle issues affecting people’s daily lives. The Fund will focus on people whose rights are most at risk, such as those facing issues around poverty, housing, education, health, racism, and disability. The funding is intended to help organisations to address the gap between policy and the lived experience of those most at risk, empowering communities to claim their rights and hold duty-bearers accountable. Misc

Grants to Promote and Secure Better and Safer Roads
Grants and bursaries are available for research, education, and community projects to promote and secure better and safer roads in terms of design, engineering, and aesthetics, including enhancements of the experience of road users. Funded activity includes courses leading to traffic engineering and transport planning, research projects and programmes or schemes to improve the highway network and the roadside environment, such as roadside parks and open spaces. No maximum or minimum grant levels are indicated. However, most grants given in the past have been between 5,000 and £30,000. The funding is being made available through the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund and the next application closing date is 04 October 2024.  Find out more
 

Grants Available to Protect Family Finances from Climate Change and the Impact of Net Zero Policies 
Charities, voluntary organisations, think tanks, campaigning groups, research bodies and universities can apply for funding for strategic work that will protect and improve the finances of people on low-to-middle incomes as the UK adapts to climate change and works towards meeting Net Zero targets. The abrdn Financial Fairness Trust’s Climate Change and Household Finances in the UK grant programme invites proposals from organisations seeking funding for policy work, campaigning and research in the areas of income, spending and assets. Applications are particularly encouraged for work focusing on transport, consumerism, energy use, labour market transitions, Scotland and UK-wide work, and other Net Zero and financial wellbeing themes. There is no minimum or maximum funding amount, but most grants range between £10,000 and £200,000. The deadline for applications is 1pm on 03 June 2024Find out more
 

Funding to Help Tackle Growing Household Electrical Waste
Material Focus has announced that its Electricals Recycling Fund is due to reopen to applications for projects that make it easier for UK householders to recycle their electrical goods. This round of funding will support projects that test new and practical ways for people to reuse and recycle their electricals, introduce kerbside collections, and add more collection points and bring banks. The funding will be available to a range of organisations including local authorities, waste collection authority areas, contractors, not-for-profits, community sector organisations, producer compliance schemes, and retailers. Organisations can register their details to receive updates on the 2024 funding round. Find out more

 

 

Music and Art

Funding to Support Young Creatives to Launch a Project, Idea or Business
Youth Music, a national charity funded by the National Lottery,  has announced that round 6 of the NextGen Fund has opened for applications. The fund supports emerging musicians and behind the scenes creatives aged 18-25 (and under-30s who identify as d/Deaf or Disabled) from across the UK to launch a creative project, idea or business. Grants of up to £2,500 could help people including singers, songwriters, producers, djs, managers and agents who do not have the financial means to invest in themselves, to start a record label, launch a single, or provide a platform that supports underrepresented voices. Funding can also cover costs linked to career development, audience development or marketing, equipment and software, and business development. Schools

Funding to Support Education in Disadvantaged Areas
Grants are available to support schools and registered charities that wish to undertake educational projects with children and young people under the age of 25 in marginalised communities within the UK and internationally. The British & Foreign Schools Society normally makes grants totalling about £900,000 in any one year. For UK projects, the focus is on improving the educational outcomes and life chances of care experienced young people. For international projects, the focus is on improving the quality, sustainability, and access to education for young people in marginalised and deprived communities. Grants for UK projects range between £30,000 and £90,000, and for international projects up to £60,000. There is a two-stage application process. Stage 1 applications can be submitted at any time. Applications shortlisted at this stage will be invited to submit a Stage 2 proposal. Find out more
 

Free Trees for Schools & Community Groups
Hundreds of thousands of trees are being given away to help the UK reach its 2050 carbon net-zero target. Schools, nurseries, colleges, universities, outdoor learning centres, and other groups such as resident associations, sports clubs, parish councils, scouts and guides from across the UK are amongst the organisations eligible to apply for up to 420 trees to improve their local environment. Tree packs available include hedging, copse, wild harvest, year-round colour, working wood, wild wood, wildlife, and urban trees. The Woodland Trust is currently taking applications for trees to be delivered in March 2024. Applications are expected to close in August 2024, or sooner depending on stock availabilityFind out more

 

 

 

Sports Facilities

Funding for the Provision or Upgrading of Sports Facilities
Organisations such as local authorities, schools, area sports associations, sports trusts and charities; etc can apply for funding of up to £200,000 to improve their sports facilities. In areas of high deprivation, the maximum grant can be £250,000 (up to 75% of project costs). Grants are available to help with the provision or upgrading of sports facilities for the public good and that benefit the community. Priority will be given to projects which focus on increasing participation within underrepresented groups in sport such as young people, women and girls, disabled people or those from deprived communities. Theatres

Capital Grants for Theatre Improvements
Theatre Operators can apply for grants of up to £20,000 to improve the environmental sustainability of their theatres. The Theatre Improvement Scheme can support a range of projects that consider different ways theatre buildings or equipment can reduce their environmental impact. This might range from building management systems to more efficient water heaters, or a green roof to new windows. The funding is being made available through the Theatres Trust in partnership with the Wolfson Foundation and the closing date for applications is 12 noon on 05 September 2024Find out more

 

 

Training

Renfrewshire HSCP Health Improvement Team are delighted to share a new Vaping & Tobacco awareness raising course. The course will be delivered by LANDED which is a young persons' charity who work with young people to promote messages of harm reduction on topics such as; Tobacco, drugs, cannabis, alcohol and sexual health. As part of their services they provide staff training opportunities to build the knowledge, understanding and confidence of staff members who work directly with young people.

We'll also be joined by The National Lottery Community Fund for an update on what funding is available this year and guidance on how to ensure your funding application is as strong as possible.
