World Health Day: building a fairer, healthier world.
07/04/2021 (Staff Post - Karen McIntyre )
Today (April 7, 2021) is World Health Day, and this year’s theme is: building a fairer, healthier world.
We know that health inequalities present so many preventable problems in our communities; from increased everyday stress and anxiety, to shorter life expectancy. It is important that we recognise the many factors which contribute to our health; ensure that everyone has living and working conditions that support good health; and provide access to quality health care regardless of where you live.
Throughout covid we’ve seen some remarkable responses to supporting people living in vulnerable circumstances. Food provision has become a priority in order to maintain the health of individuals.
In Renfrewshire, communities responded to the need of those around them with extraordinary commitment and creativity. For example, various community food groups came together to utilise surplus food supply and redistribute it. This was not only beneficial to avoiding unnecessary landfill, for individuals and families it was a lifeline that provided food, and also a break from loneliness and social isolation.
Eating a healthy balanced diet is a huge part of sustaining good health. For that reason, Engage is launching our Renfrewshire Recipes page today, on World Health Day. It is a fabulous collection of video recipes; meals which can be produced on a budget, without fuss, and with basic kitchen utensils. The videos are provided by our wonderful member organisations – starting with STAR Project and Kairos. We’ve also included some information about community food provision in your local area, and some hints and tips from UWS about meal planning and food budgeting.
If your organisation would like to contribute to the page, either with recipes, videos, or food provision information, please let us know firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you and Happy World Health Day!
