Sports Clubs & Renfrewshire Leisure Active Schools – Volunteering in Renfrewshire

21/08/2020 (Volunteer Post )

As restrictions ease and it was announced this week that gyms, pools and indoor sports facilities will reopen sooner than expected we thought we would hear again from one of the many dedicated sports volunteers in Renfrewshire. This week’s post is slightly different as we will hear from a volunteer who volunteers for several sports clubs; Mark has a range of experience, from his time founding the Paisley Barbell Club to his present role as the president of the Kelburne Hockey Club.

We previously heard from Sophie, a young volunteer with the Active Schools programme (you can see her post here) so keep reading to see a different perspective of this great initiative.

Mark is a PE teacher by day but through his volunteering supports many people beyond his school pupils with their fitness and wellbeing. He is a dedicated volunteer, who heartily encourages others to try volunteering. We asked him for his advice for new and prospective volunteers and his response was simple, “Do it. You will not regret it. There will be times where it will seem like a thankless task but the good aspects far outweigh this. I have been fortunate to have had some amazing experiences and none of this would have happened if I hadn’t volunteered”.

Thanks to his volunteering Mark has learnt a wealth of skills that have “helped me in everyday life, these include leadership, delegation, presentation skills, working collaboratively with others within the organisation as well as partners.” But, as with many of our volunteers this week, the element he enjoys the most is seeing others grow and learn.

Mark feels he is paying forward the kindness and support of other volunteers before him, he explained “I was fortunate that when I was at school and starting out in hockey people took the time to support and nurture me and I try to do the same for people now.”

As usual we close with Mark’s three words he associates with his volunteering: Dedicated, Impact, & Community.
