Our Place Our Families – Programme Highlight

Our Place Our Families is a charity organisation based in Renfrew which provides families in the Renfrew area with a variety of services to improve health & wellbeing.

During COVID19 they have supported the community in a variety of ways, including wellbeing phone calls to older neighbours, essential supplies delivered and, most successfully creative activity packs to keep families and individuals active throughout.

“We came up with the idea of the activity packs because we have 40 primary school age registered from our play scheme, which we deliver in Kirklandneuk Community Centre. We were due to deliver the play scheme for the two week Easter holidays, but then Covid19 hit and lock down began. We realized that the parents or guardians may not have a lot of activities, or be able to access certain items that would help to keep the young children occupied.”

Ever growing as an organisation OPOF decided to include adults in their activity pack deliveries after they were contacted by relatives of local residents. “We were contacted by family members that are not in Scotland who were very worried about their elderly parent, so we then started delivering items and conducted phone calls to reassure the family members.”

From these calls they discovered that it wasn’t just young ones who were finding themselves with a lack of entertainment. One example is Mary, pictured below. She is a keen knitter but due to shielding couldn’t access wool “so we got some and put it in her activity bag. She is now knitting baby cardigans, mitts and hats to go to the maternity hospital for stillborn babies.”

“So far we have delivered 267 activity packs for families and individuals. We’ve worked with the local community, working in partnership with Health Improvement Team who gave us toothbrushes and toothpaste to add to the bags. We even contacted Dominic’s Chip Shop in Renfrew, who donated some of the bags we have used to put the items in!”

You can see more community members enjoying their activity packs in the video below.
