Filled with fairy snow…and watched the world turn day-glo…
It’s the shortest day to today; the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. Traditionally, this day has been a time to celebrate – while it marks the official start of the winter it also means the return of the Sun and the days will start to get longer, with a little more light everyday… Dark mornings and early evenings can be tough right? Christmas lights do help keep the cheer and as we move towards the festive break I have to say that my running routine is all the better because of:
- My headtorch
- My ridiculously fluorescent jacket
- My 80’s disco style glow in the dark wristbands
- And of course, the neighbours’ Christmas light displays…
My various running circuits take me past a cacophony of illuminated Christmas magic including traditional Santa inflatables, glowing reindeers, red & white candy canes, snow projectors and at least one bright green Grinch. I’ve even found myself thinking:
‘Once I’m past that house that’s got that blow up Santa climbing the rope ladder I’m halfway…’
and
‘I know there’s only 10 minutes to go once I reach the house with the stone lions wearing Santa hats…’
I’ve read a few bits and pieces about what the brain does when your running – it seems that running works a bit like meditation providing focus, helping with stress and improving mood, but I’ve yet to read any study that attempts to link the effect of running around in the dark against the backdrop of glow in the dark festive lights, but I’m sure the results would be illuminating…all apologies.
We’ve got an event early in 2023 that’s worth knowing about:
All the best for the festivities – and here’s to a great 2023!
